What is the highest and best use of your life? Seems like a huge question, a dauntingly huge
question that you would rather run from than embrace. Am I right? I really wish that each student
in high school would be given access to a life coach. To a mentor that would loosely guide them
through their 20‘s & 30’s so that they might start to look inwards earlier;
so that each one of us would have the opportunity to ask, "What is the one
thing that I can do right now that will make a difference?" The truth is each decision you make, no
matter how trivial or insignificant it may seem at the time are actually the building
blocks to your future. Visualize a
mighty pyramid and imagine the master who laid forth the plans with both excitement
and fear. Now imagine how the laborers
must have felt when they first saw the blueprints and knew they were the link
between the dream and the reality. Do
you think they were overwhelmed? Do you
think at many times during the construction they thought to themselves, this
will never get done? With the vision &
instruction of the leader and the daily cheerleading of the lead craftsmen, the
great pyramids were built. Your life is a great pyramid. Each morsel of food you eat, each book you
read, each interaction you have with other people and the world around you all
are the building blocks to your very own master plan. If I could have written my own commencement
address, I would have said something like this: Don’t ever think that the daily
choices you make (no matter how insignificant they may seem at the time) will
not have an impact on your future. The
way you feel about yourself, the way you age, the successes you have as a
spouse, as a parent, as an employee and as a friend are all interconnected with
the decisions you make each and every day.
So I ask you this, "How are you going to remember to ask yourself, “what
is highest and best use of my time?” If
you can remember to do just this one thing every single day of your life, I can
assure you that your masterpiece awaits….and oh what a tremendous thing it will
be!
